The 1930 World Cup was the very first edition of the tournament, hosted by Uruguay from 13 to 30 July 1930 in Montevideo. Thirteen teams entered , seven from South America, four from Europe, and two from North America , though many European sides stayed away due to the difficulty of travel during the Great Depression. The first two matches were played simultaneously, with France beating Mexico 4–1 (Lucien Laurent scoring the tournament's first ever goal) and the United States beating Belgium 3–0 (Jimmy Douglas recording the first clean sheet). Uruguay, Argentina, the United States, and Yugoslavia won their groups to reach the semi-finals. In the final, host nation and pre-tournament favourites Uruguay beat Argentina 4–2 in front of 68,346 fans at the Estadio Centenario to become the first world champions.
