The number the model is embarrassed about

Start with the figure, because the figure is the whole story. Tottenham 36. Aston Villa 34. The draw sits between them at 30. Add the three together and you get 100, which is the only clean thing about this forecast. There is no favourite here, not really. There is a home side with a two point edge in a sport where two points of probability is noise.

The temptation is to reach for narrative, to find the angle that converts 36-30-34 into a story with a hero and a villain and a turning point. Resist it. The number is the story. Two points of probability between two good teams, on a Saturday lunchtime in September, in a league where the gap between the sixth-best and the tenth-best side is a couple of injuries and a bad month.

If you take one thing from this, take the calibration. A favourite at 36% is a favourite the way a coin that lands heads 36 times in a hundred is a coin. It is a real lean. It is a tiny one. Anyone who tells you they know how this match goes is telling you about themselves, not about the football. The model does not know either, and it has the good manners to say so, in three numbers and a conviction score of 51.
